Which days banks close
Which Saturdays are bank holidays?
The 2nd and 4th Saturdays of every month, since 1 September 2015. All scheduled and non-scheduled banks close on them; the 1st, 3rd and 5th Saturdays are full working days.
Is every Saturday a bank holiday now?
No. As of 2 October 2026 no five-day week for banks has been notified: the 1st, 3rd and 5th Saturdays remain working days.
Are banks closed on Sundays?
Yes. Under the Negotiable Instruments Act, 1881, every Sunday is a public holiday. RBI’s lists have no rows for Sundays, so a festival that falls on a Sunday is not listed here either.
Do UPI, NEFT and RTGS work on bank holidays?
NEFT works on all days of the year, holidays included, since 16 December 2019. RTGS works round the clock since 14 December 2020, apart from short breaks RBI schedules and announces. RBI says digital payment options such as UPI and IMPS are available round the clock.
Why does RBI list holidays by office, not by state?
RBI publishes its list of holidays under the Negotiable Instruments Act for each of its regional offices, not for each state. A state page here shows RBI’s list for the office or offices in that state; where a state has several offices, their lists can differ.
What changed (latest: 2 October 2026)
